The Marine Issues Committee is seeking a full-time Community Supported Fishery Coordinator for one year. This position is currently guaranteed for three month with continued employment dependant on funding and performance. 
 
Entering its second year of operation, Off the Hook Cooperative is an enterprising group of fishermen located on the Digby Neck and Islands who are working in partnership with the Ecology Action Centre to develop a successful Community Supported Fishery (CSF) direct marketing venture. CSFs are a fairly new form of direct marketing seafood enterprise modeled after similar local food ventures in agriculture. Customers pre-subscribe for a season of weekly deliveries of fresh, high quality fish caught sustainably with hook and line gear including. This model offers the opportunity for people to get to know their local fishermen and learn skills such as filleting. 
 
The Community Supported Fishery Coordinator will be responsible for the daily operations of business ensuring it runs smoothly, is profitable and is organized according to its ‘triple bottom line’ stated values. The CSF Coordinator will also be responsible more broadly in education and advocacy around seafood in the local food movement, coastal community issues, and sustainable fishing policy. They will work closely with the EAC financial director, the Coop board members, the Marine Issues Coordinators and other EAC staff. The position reports to the Marine Issues Committee and the Off the Hook Cooperative board of directors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing the day to day operations of Off the Hook’s CSF including:
    • marketing
    • delivery logistics
    • customer service
    • coordinating volunteers
    • reporting to board members
    • maintenance of email list, website
  • public presentations
  • government and media relations
  • developing new markets
  • proposal writing and fundraising;
  • reports to funders and supporters
  • financial management
  • participating in, and supporting, the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre; and
  • other duties as required.

 
Required Skills and Experience: 

  • entrepreneurial skills - strategic thinking, flexibility, creativity, persistence
  • marketing experience
  • excellent project management skills, including budget management
  • proven media communication skills including social media
  • ability to communicate and work effectively with a wide range of partners including fishermen, government, rural and urban customers, and volunteers
  • proven proposal and reporting skills
  • experience supervising staff and coordinating volunteers
  • experience planning and promoting events
  • highly organized
  • Flexible hours; occasional evening and weekend hours will be required

 
Desired qualities:

  • Familiarity with local food movement
  • Familiarity with small-scale fisheries issues
  • Ability to quickly grasp / understand provincial policy structure
  • Understanding of cooperative governance and experience working with a Board is an asset.

 
Start Date: early May 2011
 
Salary: 21.00/hr; 30hours/wk
