Description

We are looking for a Communications Officer, Marine who will be responsible for managing communications activities supporting WWF’s work on oceans. S/he will report to the Communication Director, and also have a dotted reporting line to the Head of European Marine Policy.

Location: WWF European Policy Office in Brussels

Main responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and regularly review the communications strategy on EU marine policy and contribute to the communications strategy on implementing the WWF global oceans agenda in Europe, the Fish Forward project & other projects in close cooperation with WWF national offices and Brussels based NGOs working on similar issues;
  • Independently manage all project deliverables on communications tools and materials, including website, marketing materials, press releases, fact sheets, articles, op-eds, reports;
  • Drafting, editing and proofreading texts (articles, reports, speeches etc.) in a variety of styles and formats; support the marine policy team in drafting and editing other written materials, especially for advocacy purposes;
  • Liaison with external suppliers such as writers, printers, photographers; overseeing production processes including artwork and design; Media work: Identify opportunities for media coverage, organise media briefings, interviews and events; monitor media coverage in Brussels/EU and Member State level on ocean governance and fisheries issues.

What you need:

 

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent spoken and written English; additional EU languages an asset;
  • A university degree in communication, journalism, EU politics, or a related field; or extensive experience in communication, campaigning or journalism with a focus on ocean or environmental issues preferred.

 

Required Skills and Competencies

·         At least 3 years of experience in working in communications and/or campaigning, preferably at regional or EU level, within a consultancy or in-house;

·         Understanding of environmental and climate issues, ideally at EU policy level, an asset; enthusiastic about working on ocean issues;

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including extensive experience in writing and editing texts of different styles tailored to different audiences;

·         Good experience with maximising impact of communications through social media (esp. Twitter);

·         Ability to express complex scientific or policy advice with clarity;

·         Good knowledge of media relations at EU level an asset;

·         Strong organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills and a keen eye for detail;

·         Basic knowledge of the EU institutions and political decision-making process;

·         Strong team player able to work effectively in a global network setting;

·         Adhere to WWF’s values: Knowledgeable, Optimistic, Determined and Engaging.
