Coordinates all IFAW Oceania media and public relations initiatives to raise profile and maximise IFAW’s influence in achieving animal welfare legislative reforms, governmental action and public support. Working in collaboration with the Communications department at IFAW Headquarters, develops, implements and evaluates the Oceania communication strategies with the objective of obtaining maximum positive coverage and public engagement and support for IFAW activities and campaigns. Ensures that IFAW’s core messages and campaigns are highlighted in all forms of media.
Responsibilities:
Develop, implement and evaluate an overall strategic communications plan to meet IFAW Oceania’s program and organisational objectives and to obtain maximum positive coverage and public engagement for IFAW activities and campaigns.
Prepare integrated communications planning for IFAW campaigns and major initiatives and generate creative tactics in support of these.
Take an active approach to managing daily scans of all media, including social media, to ascertain emerging issues and trends that IFAW can take advantage of to benefit its marketing or campaign objectives.
Maintain a fresh and updated knowledge and analysis of the not-for-profit communications arena, provide strategic media and communications guidance, advice and assistance to the Oceania regional office.
Write, edit and/or oversee the production of communications collateral including advertising, media releases, local IFAW publications, online and social media content in collaboration with IFAW HQ.
Develop and maintain close links with key journalists at a national and regional level and act as main contact person between media and IFAW spokespeople.
Work collaboratively with partner organisations whilst ensuring effective promotion of IFAW’s contribution to joint efforts.
Ensure effective media monitoring and timely production of media analysis reports.
Plan, implement and monitor the Oceania communication budgets.
Manage communications staff and volunteers as required.
Requirements:
Degree in communications, journalism or equivalent with five years of experience in media and communications, including strategic communications planning (internal and external audiences), implementation and evaluation.
Excellent knowledge and understanding of Oceania media in all its forms including print, broadcast and social media
An understanding of and commitment to animal welfare issues.
Experience of scheduling and budgeting.
Experience of managing media campaigns that have changed attitudes, behaviour or legislation would be an advantage.
Experience of working in an international media environment would be an advantage.
Ability to lead and work as part of a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to be creative and innovative
Ability to plan strategically and to prioritise projects
Computer literate –standard office applications including word processing and internet communications.
