The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

The Rainforest Alliance’s Climate Program works to conserve biodiversity and enhance livelihoods by supporting sustainable land management practices to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Climate Program is cross-programmatic, involving activities of the sustainable forestry, agriculture and tourism programs of the Rainforest Alliance. The two principal foci are carbon forestry and agroforestry offset projects and the sustainable production of commodity crops for biofuels. The Climate Initiative works with a wide range of stakeholders, from small producers to large corporations to governments.

Position Summary: 

The Communications Advisor will be responsible for the development, management and implementation of activities to effectively deliver the communications strategy of M-REDD. This position will serve to raise awareness about MREDD project goals, objectives and benefits among key public and private stakeholder groups, emphasizing education and awareness raising among forest communities; comprehensive media outreach and publicity; and supporting project partners to share information on core project components. This position will require close coordination with staff from multiple Rainforest Alliance division and amongst various project partners, particularly The Nature Conservancy and its appointed Chief of Party. 

Project: 

The Climate Program seeks a Communications Advisor for a USAID-funded program in Mexico, M-REDD (Mexico –Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). The five-year program will support Mexico’s REDD-readiness process by establishing and/or strengthening policy, institutional and technical capacity building, financing and other core aspects required to ensure the successful implementation of REDD+ in Mexico. The program will operate at the national-, regional- and project-levels, and will engage a diverse group of stakeholders, including governmental agencies, private sector companies, civil society and indigenous groups. The program will complement and expand upon the Rainforest Alliance’s existing projects and programs in Mexico. 

Responsibilties: 

Communications Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and lead implementation of the MREDD communications strategy to share our vision for REDD+ and to communicate the achievements of the core objectives (policy, capacity building, finance, and MRV) of the MREDD project;
  • Coordinate closely with the Mexico Government to produce consistent communications through effective protocols;
  • Create and lead the media outreach strategy to promote M-REDD´s accomplishments among key audiences;
  • Develop in coordination with technical staff effective yearly work plan for implementing the communications strategy;

Communications Outreach, Publicity, and Media

  • Oversee effective documentation of M-REDD´s work in Mexico through photos, video, and other media;
  • Research, draft content and edit public promotional materials and publications (printed and electronic) in Spanish for key external audiences, such as brochures, fact sheets, posters and websites;
  • Edit and coordinate M-REDD internal reports, project case studies, and other written materials in Spanish, including regular donor reporting on M-REDD activities in the field;
  • Coordinate the design and production of materials to be published such as fact sheets, brochures, digital publications, etc.;
  • Manage the addition of all appropriate project information¸ products and materials to the online M-REDD Pathway and promote this resource to stakeholders;
  • Field to appropriate project staff and respond to requests from the media, key stakeholders, M-REDD staff and the public about M-REDD´s work in a timely manner;
  • Coordinate translations of M-REDD information as needed;
  • Promote and monitor M-REDD program’s presence on external websites;
  • Monitor and participate in sustainable forestry online communities to identify and alert colleagues about new opportunities;
  • Coordinate with Education team on an education campaign to reach out to women and youth in forest dependent communities.

Management and Administration

  • Ensure that communications protocols developed for MREDD are understood and followed by project partners;
  • Prepare periodic progress reports and updates for internal use;
  • Participate in site visits to understand the implementation of REDD+ strategies and programs; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications or journalism;
  • Minimum 7 years work experience in journalism, communications, and/or media outreach;
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet, Photoshop, etc);
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in Spanish; strong skills in spoken and written English;
  • Knowledge of the publication process (print and digital);
  • Outstanding photography and videotaping skills;
  • Interest and experience in blogging and/or other Web 2.0 realms;
  • Strong interest and some experience in biodiversity conservation, climate change and/or development issues, particularly in Latin America; experience in tropical agriculture, biology and/or forestry a plus;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals;
  • Ability to work within a team structure as well as independently, be creative, take initiative, be attentive to detail, be able to work well under deadlines; and
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 30% per year, nationally and internationally.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
