The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is seeking a Coalitions Coordinator (CC) for our Food & Environment program, which works to transform our nation’s food system into one that provides affordable, healthy food for all, supports sustainable farming systems, and is fair to farmers, workers, and eaters. We do this work in partnership with other organizations, diverse in mission and size, to build power for our movement. Your job as CC will be to oversee the growth of our coalition relationships, revitalize and continue to build member engagement, provide support in policymaking education and awareness, as well as advocacy settings, develop strategic actions, and lay the groundwork for grassroots-driven policy agendas that prioritize racial equity and inclusion in our food system. You’ll work with an existing coalition’s steering committee and UCS government affairs and outreach staff to plan and manage activities and campaigns and collaborate on communications that report on coalition activities. This is a mid-level leadership position: the right candidate must be able to encourage teamwork and collaboration, support coalition partners in multiple projects, understand how organizations work together, and contribute to a positive work culture.

Responsibilities

  • The CC will support UCS’s science-based advocacy mission and our unique relationships with coalitions
  • Help plan and develop a strategic vision and priorities for an existing coalition working collaboratively with its executive steering committee
  • Oversee and support successful implementation and facilitation of coalition strategies and tactics
  • Identify and implement ways to grow coalition membership and increase member engagement with designated members
  • Ensure representation of the coalition in advocacy forums, conferences, and other relevant venues, including travel (if COVID-safe) approximately 15% of the time
  • Manage relationships with the staff of partner organizations to coordinate shared resources and work products
  • Contribute to formal reporting on coalition activities
  • Organize coalition efforts and community meetings such as advocacy events and briefings
  • Coordinate events and annual meetings
  • Three to five years of relevant and comparable experience in nonprofit organizations, coalitions, and advocacy work, including experience working with a diverse set of groups—from grassroots activists to policy experts, outreach, and communications staff.
  • Develop and maintain all modes of public-facing and internal communication and information (e.g., web sites, newsletters, routine correspondence, and materials), with support from relevant organizations and staff

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Three to five years of relevant and comparable experience in nonprofit organizations, coalitions, and advocacy work, including experience working with a diverse set of groups—from grassroots activists to policy experts, outreach, and communications staff.
  • We believe experience matters and is equally as important as formalized education. While a Bachelor’s degree preferred, it is not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking, meeting facilitation, and ability to interact professionally and sensitively with individuals with a wide range of experiences, skills, backgrounds, and responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with food and farm policy, racial equity issues in the food system, and community food systems preferred.
  • Ability to build solid relationships with teammates, partners, and specialists in different areas by fostering teamwork, partnership, and collaboration in virtual or face-to-face environments.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to create materials relating to food and agriculture policy topics, are essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills are required, with the ability to conceptualize, propose, and execute projects independently, with substantial support from Food and Environment program staff.
  • Considerable self-motivation and attention to detail, and knowledge of office and administrative support procedures, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software are needed.

Details:

This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $52,500. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
