The appointee will be a member of the Climate Variability and Change Program, CAWCR/BoM, and will work to improve understanding and prediction of the Indo-Pacific ocean/atmosphere climate with emphasis on the prediction of the year-to-year variations of regional climate through out the region. This project will establish the limits of predictability of Indo-Pacific climate using the Bureau of Meteorology’s coupled dynamical seasonal prediction system (POAMA). Case studies of past predictions of regional climate and of coupled variations of the Indio-Pacific atmosphere/ocean will be analysed in order to assess successes and failures of the current operational system. The project will elucidate the drivers of Indo-Pacific climate variability and assess their representation in the POAMA forecast model, thereby contributing to the evaluation and improvement of the POAMA system. The appointee will help develop web-based forecast products of relevance to regional climate of Pacific Island nations based on the real-time prediction system. The appointee will write documentation, prepare journal papers, and assist in the operational implementation of prediction systems. The engagement will initially be for a period of two years.
