Climate Irreplaceable Ecosystems Intern

POSITION SUMMARY

The Climate Irreplaceable Ecosystems intern will support us in creating maps and other key scientific outputs to advance the protection of the places the climate (and we) can't afford to lose. The position requires strong spatial analysis skills, basic knowledge of carbon storage in ecosystems, and the ability to communicate science to diverse audiences, including cross-culturally. The Intern will support Conservation International’s initiative on Climate Irreplaceable Ecosystems, which includes both foundational science and direct implementation through our Field Divisions. The goals of the position will be to create key scientific contributions, including maps, for products ranging from peer-reviewed studies to funding proposals to policy recommendations. We are seeking a self-starter who is passionate about climate change and conservation, and eager to learn.

Summer intern position. Approximate dates of May 15-August 15, somewhat flexible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Intern will be responsible for:

• Contributing analysis to peer-reviewed papers
• Producing maps for Conservation International country programs and providing technical support for their use
• Designing fact sheets or policy briefs for upcoming events
• Contributing analysis for funding proposals and policy recommendations, as needed (deliverables can be shaped partly on Intern's own interests)
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS

• The position is based in downtown Seattle under normal office conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Self-motivated, curious, passionate, professional
• Able to advance projects with limited guidance but also asks for help when needed
• Intermediate to advanced spatial analysis skills (ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
• Able to develop high-quality cartographic and communication materials (e.g., in Photoshop)
• Coursework and/or demonstrated interest in climate change, environmental science/policy, conservation biology, or similar
• Demonstrated experience in communicating science to diverse audiences
• Intern must be in school (undergraduate or graduate) or have graduated within 1 year 

Preferred

• Experience with Google Earth Engine a plus
• Language skills are a plus (Spanish, Bahasa, or Portuguese are especially helpful)
