As a collaborating centre of UN Environment (UNEP), UDP works with a large range of international institutions, national governments and research institutions, to assist countries in their efforts to move towards climate resilient and sustainable development. UDP has a staff of approximately 70 professionals from 20 different countries with backgrounds covering economics, science, engineering, and energy and environment planning. UDP currently implements project activities in more than 60 developing countries.

About the Climate Resilient Development (CRD) Programme
The CRD Programme is one of four programmes at UDP. We support the design, development and implementation of strategies and actions that effectively address climate change adaptation and sustainable development needs, with a primary focus on developing countries. Currently, we are expanding our portfolio of activities and are recruiting an experienced climate change expert to join a team of 11 colleagues. The successful candidate will contribute to expanding and implementing our work in the following three priority areas:

  • Diffusion and uptake of technologies for adaptation
  • Climate compatible development planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Engaging private sector in climate resilience

In each of these areas, the Programme is engaged in capacity building and provision of technical support, combined with methodology development and piloting. The Program in addition provides policy advice and engages in knowledge dissemination.

Key tasks and responsibilities
The expert will contribute to the development, expansion and implementation of activities, particularly within the following areas:

  • Establishing conceptual frameworks for and conducting analysis of private sector engagement in adaptation
  • Contributing to national technology assessments, action plans and implementation
  • Support to Nationally Determined Contributions: assisting countries in refining, operationalising, and implementing adaptation actions
  • Supporting work on UNEPs Emissions and Adaptation Gap Reports

The successful candidate has a strong methodological background and proven experience in adapting and applying adaptation-relevant quantitative and qualitative methods and tools in a developing country context.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Generate new ideas and stimulate innovative approaches to addressing challenges in assessing adaptation in a developing country context
  • Initiate and lead high-impact publications, including briefs and reports
  • Support and ensure the technical rigor of complex analytical and advisory services
  • Initiate, contribute to and/or lead resource mobilisation activities, including project concept development and preparation of project proposals
  • Provide research-based scientific advice and dissemination to public sector authorities, the business community and society in general
  • Cultivate and maintain effective networks and partnerships with country partners, partner agencies and multi-partner fora
  • Represent UNEP DTU Partnership and the Climate Resilient Development Programme at expert meetings, regional consultations, workshops and seminars

Selection Criteria
We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced team player who possesses strong knowledge and expertise in the climate change and development area and who fully meets the following criteria:

  • A PhD degree in Economics or other relevant field
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with climate change adaptation and development research, scientific advice and dissemination in an international context
  • Demonstrated excellent writing, communication and presentation skills in English. Working proficiency in Spanish and/or French is a strong advantage
  • Initiation and implementation of projects in co-operation with development aid donor agencies, international experts, and developing country institutions and experts
  • Experience in building, managing, and participating in diverse project teams
  • Management of bilateral and/or multilateral development budgets for climate change adaptation. Experience with working with UN agencies and UNEP in particular is an advantage
  • A track record of teamwork and ability to produce high-quality results and outputs under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills and an ability to inspire and mentor less experienced colleagues
  • Proven experience in leading capacity building activities in developing countries
  • Strong knowledge of the scientific and international climate change policy context, including the IPCC and UNFCCC
