Description

Stand.earth is hiring a passionate markets campaigner to play a key role in holding the rogue apparel industry to account for its massive climate footprint, and convince some of fashion’s biggest brands to transition their global supply chains away from dirty coal to renewables.

If you love developing creative campaign strategies, have a knack for deep corporate research and engagement, enjoy a well-timed headquarters protest, and thrive in front of a camera or behind an email action alert, this might be the perfect role for you!

We encourage applicants to apply by August 26, 2019. This position is open until filled.

The apparel industry is responsible for more than 8% of global climate emissions. And the vast majority of its pollution comes from its global supply chains, where manufacturers haven’t been held responsible for their emissions – at least not until Stand.earth launched our Filthy Fashion campaign in 2017. Last summer, we secured our first major victory when denim giant Levi’s committed to reduce its global climate pollution by 40% over the next 6 years. Now the campaign is ready to scale up, and we are seeking a highly motivated Climate Campaigner to be the driving force behind this next phase as we work to transform the entire apparel industry.

This position is ideally based at one of our hub offices in Vancouver, BC; Bellingham WA; or San Francisco, CA; but we will consider outstanding remote candidates in Pacific or Mountain time zone.

Reporting to the Director of Digital and Campaign Strategies, the Climate Campaigner will work on a small, highly collaborative team that includes actions, communications and digital staff in Canada and the US. They will also work with researchers and allied organizations all around the world, particularly in Southeast Asia. This person will be responsible for refining and implementing the “Filthy Fashion” campaign strategy, conducting corporate and issue research, communicating with key audiences through traditional and digital channels, recruiting and engaging volunteer activists, coordinating with allies, and executing creative high-impact actions.

This is a full-time exempt position with excellent benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and adjusted based on location, but will likely be within the range of $55,000-65,000 USD or $60,000-70,000 CAD.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and executing the Filthy Fashion campaign strategy, including online and offline tactics that support and achieve campaign goals
  • Skillfully coordinating a team of 3-5 other staff and external contractors
  • Acting as the main public face of the campaign with allies/ partners and in the media
  • Leading direct corporate communication with the biggest fashion brands in the world
  • Conducting industry and issue-focused research as needed
  • Developing communication materials to engage our online community, build our base and get noticed in the media
  • Building and maintaining relationships with partner organizations, allies and volunteers, and coordinating activities and events together
  • Providing support on Stand’s other climate campaigns as needed

Who you'll be:

  • Have a track record of building power and achieving campaign success
  • Passionate about climate justice and environmental protection, and juiced up by the thought of convincing governments and corporations to make meaningful and lasting change
  • Highly organized, flexible, creative and comfortable working in a fast-paced team that spans multiple offices in multiple cities
  • Able to not only comfortably manage your own workload by setting and tracking key priorities, but also support your teammates to manage their priorities and workloads
  • Reflective and self aware; committed to Stand’s principles of equity, authentic communication, and continual learning
  • A great project and people manager
  • A top notch writer, editor and communicator; able to adapt your style to work for a variety of audiences, from corporate negotiations to social media
  • Able to recruit, support and manage teams of volunteers with minimal supervision
  • Digital and media savvy – familiar enough with this campaigning landscape to propose smart digital tactics and represent the campaign in the media

There isn’t a formal educational requirement for the role, and there will be opportunities for learning and mentorship within the campaigns team in everything from budgeting to international climate policy.

In addition, it’s nice but not essential for you to have some of the following skills or experiences:

  • Demonstrated experience with successful corporate or markets campaigning
  • A love of fashion or deep knowledge of the apparel sector (fashionistas of all genders and gender identifications are definitely encouraged to apply)
  • Knowledge of the global coal campaigning landscape and an understanding of the newest coal threats
  • Enthusiastic about creating short videos, graphics for sharing on social media and other storytelling content
  • Deep relationships with partner or allied organizations working on sustainable fashion or coal, and an extensive network of community organizers, non-profit organizations and other advocacy groups
  • A proven track record executing fundraising strategies and programs
  • Familiar with the Leadnow / MoveOn / Avaaz model of online campaigning

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Talk, hear
  • Clear vision at 25 inches or less to view computer screen and read documents
  • Must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time
  • Working conditions typical of an office environment
  • Exposure to moderate levels of noise such as computers, printers, light traffic

To Apply:

Please send a 1-page cover letter and resume to fashioncampaigner@stand.earth with your name in the subject line and on each attachment. In your cover letter, tell us what’s motivating you to apply for this role, what fashion brand you’d absolutely love to see us shift through our Filthy Fashion campaign (and why), and which of the ‘nice to have’ qualifications you’ve got (we certainly don’t expect you to have them all!). Please also make sure to let us know how you heard about this position. The recruitment process includes a time-bound campaigning task and two rounds of interviews. No phone calls, please. Only those who will be interviewed will be contacted.
