Do you have background of working in international development and experience of working in either Africa and / or China on environmental governance issues? If so, we could have a fantastic opportunity to put your experience to great use at WWF.
China is a significant economic player and development partner to Africa. Over the past decade there has been a substantial increase in co-operation and political dialogue between the two, accompanied by an increase in levels of investment, trade and aid. Trade and investment in natural resources is a key component of this relationship. China has insufficient natural resources (forests, minerals, oil, gas, agricultural land e.t.c.) to support its rapid economic development and its huge manufacturing sector. Africa has a wealth of natural resources and is becoming an important global supplier to international investors such as China.
China’s increasing demands for natural resources and the market opportunities it presents to Africa, represents both an opportunity and a threat for sustainable development in Africa. The key challenge is to secure a sustainable resource base into the future that can support Africa’s growth and development needs while securing China’s resource needs without widespread environmental damage. In response to this challenge, WWF has established an exciting programme of work that supports dialogue and engagement for sustainable trade and investment between key Government and private sector players in China and Africa.
We are now looking for a China Africa Programme Manager to support our partners in China and Africa to implement this programme of work. This will involve providing technical and programming advice to our partners, co-ordination and relationship management, developing strategic partnerships and fundraising with relevant Government Agencies, Private Sector and Trusts and other relevant partners. A particular requirement will be to ensure that our partners have the understanding and skills to monitor and assess the impact of their policy advocacy.
Educated to graduate level, with significant experience in international development, this should include some experience of working in either Africa and / or China on environmental governance issues. You will have an understanding of China-Africa relations and the political dimensions of this relationship. Excellent policy advocacy monitoring and evaluation, communication and organisational skills will be essential in supporting our partners in China and Africa to implement this exciting programme of work. Occasional overseas travel may be required.
