The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation, working in over 50 countries around the world. ZSL has a particularly long history of work in Africa, working across the continent and on related research and policy.  This work falls under two closely linked programmes, the West and North Africa Conservation Programme and the Central, East and Southern Africa Conservation Programme.  Projects in these programmes target protected areas and production and community forests and drylands, and address issues as varied as sustainable finance mechanisms, protected area management, bushmeat hunting and trade, alternative livelihoods, timber certification and concession management, ecological and socio-economic monitoring and research, disease and wildlife health, species reintroductions, species management and environmental impact assessment.

We are looking for an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual to oversee the Central, East and Southern Africa Conservation Programme over the next year.  This will entail development and management of projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo (www.zsl.org/virunga) and Equatorial Guinea (www.zsl.org/equatorialguinea).  These include two major, multi-partner, ZSL-led projects in DRC, carrying out a range-wide okapi conservation assessment and working with communities and protected area agencies to reduce deforestation and alleviate poverty in the Virunga-Hoyo region, and a project to evaluate, test and implement potential bushmeat alternatives in Equatorial Guinea.  The postholder will also contribute as required to projects in Kenya, Cameroon and Gabon as well as relevant research and policy outputs, such as those related to bushmeat (www.zsl.org/bushmeat). The postholder will report to the Conservation Programmes Director and will manage a team of staff, volunteers and students based in London and Africa.

Main responsibilities will include programme development and fundraising, project and staff management and administration, building and maintaining relationships with project collaborators, stakeholders and donors, coordination of cross-Society programme activities, and external representation and promotion of ZSL and its conservation work.

The postholder should have a postgraduate qualification in environmental or conservation science, environmental economics, conservation/development policy, anthropology or a related discipline, excellent written and spoken English, strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills, proven fundraising and report-writing ability, and experience of developing and managing conservation/development projects, preferably in Africa.  Good written and spoken French and/or Spanish and a relevant research and/or policy background in tropical forest conservation (particularly on payments for ecosystem services, carbon markets/REDD, livelihoods or bushmeat issues) are highly desirable.

The position will be based at ZSL’s offices in London, with occasional travel to oversee and monitor project activities as required. The position will be available for one year (to cover maternity leave), to start as soon as possible, with salary dependent on experience.

A job description can be found on our website, www.zsl.org/info/jobs

Applicants should send their CV and a covering letter detailing relevant experience and skills, and including a possible start date, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org) by Thursday 26th May 2011.  We regret that we will only be able to contact applicants who have been selected for interview.

Closing date for applications: Thursday 26th May 2011
