Job Title: Campaign Director, Beyond Oil

Department: Conservation

Location: Washington, D.C.

Reports to: Deputy Director of Conservation

Supervises: Green Transportation Campaign Director and Dirty Fuels Senior Campaign Representative

Sierra Club is currently seeking an experienced Campaign Director to lead the Beyond Oil Campaign. The Beyond Oil Campaign focuses on eliminating US oil consumption by 2030 through multiple initiatives including: tightening fuel economy standards for all vehicles, promoting the development and deployment of electric vehicles, investing in rail for freight and passengers, preventing the development of new fossil fuels (tar sands, oil shale, liquid coal), creating livable communities with oil-free transit choices, promoting sustainable biofuel development, and exploring hydrogen as alternatives to oil. The Beyond Oil Campaign is a key campaign of the Climate Recovery Partnership.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Conservation, the Campaign Director is responsible for developing overall campaign strategy and ensuring campaign effectiveness with the campaign’s Volunteer Co-Lead. The Campaign Director collaborates with the Office of Advancement to raise funds and build financial support through effective relationships with donors and foundations. The Campaign Director provides leadership, strategic and technical expertise, and overall guidance to staff, volunteers, and various Club entities to insure overall campaign objectives are successfully implemented. The Campaign Director serves as a public face of the campaign.

Job Activities:

  • Formulates and implements campaign strategy
  • Develops and executes a compelling business plan for the campaign
  • Evaluates campaign effectiveness and revises strategy as necessary
  • Manages fundraising efforts including solicitation with specific foundations, major gift fundraising, preparation of materials and writing reports
  • Supervises, directs, and coaches staff promoting productivity and accountability
  • Ensures internal communication is coordinated with various arms of the Sierra Club (Organizing, On-line organizing, Legal, Communications, Chapters, Lobbying)
  • Develops campaign budget and allocates resources appropriately
  • Represents the Sierra Club to external audiences
  • Evaluates campaign progress and effectiveness and produces reports for donors, senior managers and volunteer leaders
  • Engages volunteer participation at all levels of the campaign
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as directed

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or related field. Advanced degree preferred
  • 5-7 years of campaign or field management experience as a Representative within the Sierra Club, or in another comparable position or in another organization
  • Expert knowledge in the strategic planning and direction of campaigns and programs
  • Content knowledge of oil industry, energy efficiency, global warming/climate change preferred
  • 3–5 years prior supervisory experience that demonstrates the ability to develop, train and coach employees
  • 3-5 years experience in fundraising that includes foundation relations, individual solicitation of major gifts, and grant-funded project development and oversight. Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Substantial prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteer
  • Prior experience with fiscal and business operations management
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving records, and proof of auto insurance required
