Description

The Action on Air-Climate-Human Interactions focus on EU- and world-wide air pollutant and greenhouse gas emission reduction policies and their effects on climate change and air pollution, in particular human health.
In the context of the PhD project, the objective is to improve the understanding of the emission sources and atmospheric processes causing air pollution in the Mediterranean Basin, using data obtained from a shipborne
automated monitoring station. The measurements are performed on an Italian cruise ship following regular tracks,
mainly in the Western Mediterranean. Presently ozone, NOx, SO2, Black Carbon and particle size distributions are
measured.

The PhD project will include operating the monitoring station (in collaboration with JRC staff) and contributing to
new developments of this. This will require regular visits to the port of Savona.  The project will focus on analysis of the measured data with the aim of understanding the emission sources and the atmospheric processes that determine the concentrations of the measured pollutants. This will involve collaboration with modelers.

The ideal candidate should have a University degree (giving access to the PhD) in chemistry, physics or engineering. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of Italian would be an advantage. Relevant publications and presentations should be highlighted.  The Joint Research Centre is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its staff. It welcomes nominations of and applications from women and minority groups.
