This is a one year post that will report directly to the Conservation Programmes Director. 

 

Overall Function:

 

Work with the private sector to minimize negative impacts on the world’s species and ecosystems and where possible, improve the status of biodiversity.  This will be achieved by providing industry with the latest science and tools for monitoring and managing biodiversity and developing, promoting and implementing biodiversity related industry standards.

 

ToR for ZSL Conservation Programme Managers

PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT AND OVERSIGHT

  • To develop and implement a conservation strategy for a specific ZSL regional or global Conservation Programme (henceforth “the Programme”) – based on the five year conservation work plan.
  • To contribute to ensuring that the five year ZSL Conservation Strategy is being implemented on target and/or iteratively adapted to changing circumstances
  • Where the Programme includes projects managed by ZSL staff not reporting directly to the Programme Manager; to work with the relevant staff to ensure the monthly reports and other Programme documentation include information on these projects

      LINE-MANAGED PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND OVERSIGHT

  • To take overall responsibility, working with relevant Project Managers, for project development and project management within the Programme
  • To take overall responsibility for, and work with Project Managers and Development staff on, raising funds to support the Programme activities
  • To take overall responsibility for budgets for projects within the Programme, and ensure that all such projects are responsibly managing funds and reporting to donors
  • To monitor and review the effectiveness of projects within the Programme

ADMINISTRATION

  • To provide appropriate support for staff within the Programme.
  • To conduct annual PDRs for all staff reporting directly to the Programme Manager
  • To ensure that administrative documents such as ITTORs, grant pre-registration forms and risk assessments are completed by line-managed Programme staff where appropriate
  • To work with the CP Financial Administrator and Human Resources department to develop and manage all staff contracts within the Programme
  • To work with Project Managers to ensure ZSL health and safety policy is followed in all projects within the Programme.
  • To ensure that all project information sheets for the Programme are kept up to date

ZSL INTERNAL

  • To participate in Programme Managers’ meetings and, where appointed, to represent Conservation Programmes on ZSL committees
  • To promote and encourage cross-ZSL information sharing, collaboration and synergy
  • To coordinate internal communications for the Programme including monthly reports and compilation of monthly key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • To ensure that information for projects in the Programme is kept updated in the ZSL Projects Database
  • To maintain a library of photos and video for projects in the Programme, and to oversee contribution of suitable photos to the ZSL photo database
  • To assist with Conservation Programmes activities outside the Programme where required

EXTERNAL

  • To act as a ZSL representative for the Programme nationally and internationally, such as by participation in relevant conservation events, workshops and symposia and in collaborations with partners
  • To represent ZSL in dealings with national and international media with a view to both promoting ZSL’s work and ensuring important conservation messages are communicated; and to work with the ZSL Communications department to ensure that the science and conservation results generated by the Programme are communicated to the general public and to policy makers
  • To contribute material to ZSL communication channels such as WildAbout, the ZSL Annual Review, and the annual ZSL Conservation Report as appropriate
  • To ensure the relevant sections on the ZSL website are updated on a regular basis
  • To contribute to the work of relevant external groups, such as IUCN Specialist Groups, as appropriate

Specific responsibilities:

  • Assist in further developing the ZSL business and biodiversity strategy.
  • Assist in developing and promoting new tools for monition and managing biodiversity in a corporate landscape.
  • Assist in develop and promoting biodiversity monitoring and management protocols and standards for specific natural resources sectors.
  • Primarily focus on four resources sectors: oil palm, forestry, fisheries, and agriculture. 
  • Support staff in the field working with these industries.
  • Ensure that ZSL procurement policies are following best practice for all these sectors.
  • Assist in managing relationships with the private sector where ZSL is providing ongoing technical advice or has developed collaboration on projects such as REDD+.
  • Work closely with the Conservation Policy Programme Manager and relevant policy bodies to ensure that ZSL’s work with industry is feeding into the relevant policy process.
  • Work closely with the Indicators and Assessments Unit to develop relevant biodiversity indicators of industry.
  • Where appropriate, represent ZSL on major external business and biodiversity initiatives such BBOP. 
  • Contribute to the business and ethics committee which identifies appropriate corporate partners for the Zoological Society of London.
  • Assist with the Earth Security Initiative, working to assess the risk of ecosystem degradation to industry and society. 

Personal specification

  • Educated to degree level in biological or environmental sciences, preferably with a relevant higher degree.
  • A good understanding of business and biodiversity
  • A commitment to ZSL’s vision and mission.
  • Ability to work with diplomacy in complex situations with stakeholders representing varied priorities and agendas.
  • Ability to scope new projects, secure funding and manage project complexity.
  • Experience of competent management of budgets.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and presentation skills and an ability to communicate at senior corporate level.
  • Able to lead and facilitate workshops and deliver training sessions and seminars.
  • Ability to produce and contribute to a wide range of documents, such as business plans, consultancy reports, press releases, project briefs and presentations.
  • Technically competent with paper and electronic information systems, such as Windows and Internet.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and to consistently high standard.
  • Ability to use initiative, be self-motivating, innovative and enthusiastic.
  • Systematic, meticulous and quick worker, able to prioritise.
  • Positive, warm and flexible approach to dealing with a wide range of people.
