Description

Greater Manchester supports a rich and varied natural heritage, including the Pennine foothills, the open peatlands of the Chat Moss, a complex network of rivers and canals, ancient woodland and urban habitats. The position advertised will provide an opportunity to be part of a team dedicated to making a difference in the conservation and protection of these habitats in response to the ‘biodiversity emergency’ that has been declared in Greater Manchester.

The Greater Manchester Ecology Unit (GMEU) provides specialist advice to the ten planning authorities within Greater Manchester as well as to districts in Lancashire and Cheshire. In response to the new requirements of Biodiversity Net Gain, we are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our existing team. The role would be expected to provide support to the Planning Ecologists and Local Record Centre team on matters relating to ecology and biodiversity.

The Associate Ecologist will provide essential support to the Ecologists and Planning Manager within the planning ecology team of GMEU, whose role is focused on providing support and expert advice to the various planning teams in the region. However, GMEU also hosts the Greater Manchester Local Record Centre (GMLRC) and is a Habitat Delivery Body for District Level Licensing (DLL), and therefore there are a variety of other interesting projects that the Associate Ecologist will become involved in. These include habitat surveys and assessment of sites for Local Wildlife Site selection, species surveys and recording, assisting with biological record processing, as well as getting involved in a range of practical projects that GMEU are supporting.

About you

This role would be suited to an early career ecologist who is looking to gain more experience working in planning ecology. The post will be mentored by our experienced and friendly team, and external training will be provided where appropriate.
