Join us as an Assistant Wildlife Adviser and support our Wildlife Adviser and other consultants in the Yorkshire and the north east in providing high quality advice, primarily to National Trust managers and our property teams, as we work towards achieving higher standards of land management for nature across all of our land in the North of England. Based on your sound nature conservation knowledge we are seeking an enthusiastic individual who has great communication skills and a strong ecological background to help us deliver ambitious objectives for wildlife within our 2025 Strategy and Land, Outdoors & Nature programme. The landscapes in which you will work across the region are very diverse and will take you into some of the nation’s most cherished landscapes and places, in a role that strives to make a real difference to the care and management of our special places – forever, for everyone. What you'll be doing Under the guidance of our Wildlife Adviser you will complement and strengthen our skills and capacity to engage with properties and other NT consultants across the Region to help them understand and implement our land management and nature ambitions in the north. You will use your expertise in habitat survey, mapping and assessment to help understand the biological significance of NT land, particularly farmed land, and this knowledge will be used to identify and support a wide range of opportunities to benefit wildlife (High Nature Status). This information will help inform our land management ambitions and be incorporated into Estate Management Plans to help us plan for the future at a time of significant change for farming. As part of a wider team you will become a key advocate for High Nature Status (HNS) actively engaging with property teams and others to help embed the HNS approach to landscapes in their operations. Using your ecological monitoring experience you will encourage and enable property teams to take part in national wildlife monitoring schemes e.g. Breeding Bird Survey, National Bat Monitoring Programme. You will also help identify and establish suitable monitoring schemes for Priority Habitats and Species where appropriate, often involving volunteers/partner organisations. You will use your experience of Protected Species protection/mitigation to assist and support property teams, particularly NT Building Surveyors, in dealing appropriately with situations which arise concerning legally protected wildlife. Who we're looking for With a wide range of skills in your toolkit, you'll also be able to demonstrate the following; •A nature conservation professional with a sound knowledge of biological survey/monitoring, mapping and habitat condition assessment together with experience of protected species work; •A good understanding of external issues, legislation, policy, practice, instructions and guidance in relation to nature conservation; •A great communicator with good influencing skills to enthuse and engage and mentor others; •A self-driven and independent individual with the skills and ability to integrate into the current team and work areas; •Ability to interpret and respond to external and internal research, intelligence and analysis; •Ability to offer up an alternative perspective to some of our biggest challenges around implementing our nature ambitions in the north.
