Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

We are seeking an Assistant Programme Manager to support the Programme Managers for our conservation activities in Asia.  The successful candidate will be integral to managing and developing our diverse portfolio of conservation projects in the region.  Projects include working to secure tiger strongholds in Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and Russia; conservation and restoration of mangrove habitats in Bangladesh; protection of the one-horned rhino in Nepal; reducing human-elephant conflict in Thailand, and working with industry to encourage best practise to reduce impacts on biodiversity in Mongolia and Indonesia.

Main responsibilities will include assisting the two Asia Programme Managers with programme administration and budget management (supported by financial administration staff), project and programme development, grant-writing, internal communications and record keeping, cross-society synergy and collaborations, relations with donors and partners and external representation of ZSL and its conservation work.

The post holder will be allocated responsibility for developing discrete areas within the programme under the supervision of the Programme Managers and at their discretion.  The post-holder may be required to line-manage UK-based Project Coordinator or intern staff.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification (or higher) in an appropriate discipline.
  • Experience in project and budget management.
  • Knowledge of conservation issues in the region, ideally with some in-country experience
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and good writing skills.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • A high level of computer literacy.

In addition, experience with grant writing and reporting to donors is desirable.

Location:         ZSL’s offices in London, some international travel may be required

Position:          Full time - Permanent

Salary:             Within stated range, dependent on experience

Start date:       As soon as possible

Applicants should send their CV, and a covering letter detailing relevant experience and skills, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org) by 11 January 2013.  Terms of reference for the position can be found on the ZSL website http://www.zsl.org/about-us/jobs/current-vacancies,114,AR.html
