The Carbon Farming Policy Branch is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of policies and programs to improve the capacity of the land sector to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and increase sequestration of carbon. The branch has policy responsibility for the Carbon Farming Initiative and oversight of land sector measures as part of the Clean Energy Future plan. Positions are currently available in the CFI Methodology Development Section, Land Sector Policy and Programs Section and the CFI Policy Section.

The CFI is a legislated scheme that provides farmers, forest growers and other landholders with the opportunity to earn carbon credits for actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase the storage of carbon on their land.

The Land Sector Policy and Programs Section has responsibility for the coordination of the land sector measures in the Clean Energy Future plan. It also has responsibility for the implementation of the Carbon Farming Skills programs, the CFI Non-Kyoto Fund and the Department's components of the Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund. In addition the section is responsible for the National Carbon Offsets Standard (NCOS) and communicating opportunities under the CFI.

The CFI Policy Section has primary policy responsibility for the development of the CFI scheme including regulations for allowable and excluded projects, developing co-benefits for biodiversity and Indigenous communities and engaging with stakeholders. The section also has responsibility for issues related to Indigenous opportunities under the CFI.

The Methodology Development Team is responsible for identifying potential abatement activities in the land sector, developing methods that can be implemented under the CFI to quantify emissions abatement that is to lead to carbon offset credits, and identifying and responding to emerging policy issues Applications are sought from highly motivated persons with a combination of technical and policy skills to join the Methodology Development Team. 

The sections are seeking energetic and motivated team members to:

1. Contribute to policy development on the CFI, NCOS and land sector programs, including identification of priorities, analysis of potential issues and options for addressing them.
2. Contribute to program implementation for the Carbon Farming Skills program and CFI Non-Kyoto Fund, including development of program objectives, analysis of risks and development of project plans.
3. Engage with external stakeholders, including scientists and industry stakeholders, on an ongoing basis and provide relevant information as needed.
4. Assist with the preparation of Departmental and Ministerial briefing and correspondence as required.
5. Assist with policy coordination for the land sector, including with the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Populations and Communities and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. 
6. Assess research developments in relation to emissions abatement in the land sector and find solutions to emerging policy issues related to developing methodologies under the CFI.
7. Undertake the procurement of expert technical advice and manage consultancy contracts where required. 

  
Eligibility 
This position is a security assessed position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security assessment to obtain a Baseline Security Clearance. 
  
Notes 
Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or experience is essential or a keen interest in land management and science. Experience in areas such as forestry, climate change, agriculture or science is an advantage.
