SeaWeb, founded in 1996 to raise awareness of the growing threats to the ocean and its living resources, utilizes social marketing techniques to advance ocean conservation. By increasing public awareness, promoting science-based solutions and mobilizing decision-makers around ocean conservation, SeaWeb has brought together multiple, diverse and powerful voices for a healthy ocean. Through its award-winning, creative initiatives, SeaWeb is known as a vital and respected force in the conservation community.

SeaWeb has offices in Washington DC, San Francisco, London, Paris, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. SeaWeb is currently opening a Honolulu office.

Position Summary:

To support our Asia Pacific Program, SeaWeb is looking for a professional with a background in marine conservation issues and the ability to communicate complex ocean issues in compelling ways. The Program Associate must also be able to balance multiple projects across vast geographical areas and with cultural sensitivity. In an energetic, team-oriented environment, the Program Associate will assist the Asia Pacific Program Manager to develop and support our country programs in Fiji and Papua New Guinea and our increasing number of activities throughout the region, including ones in such as areas as Micronesia and Hawaii.

This position is ideal for a strong communicator who excels at strategic planning and partnership building and who has a passion for conserving marine ecosystems and supporting the coastal communities that depend on them.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Asia Pacific Manager in implementing SeaWeb communications strategy and work plans for the region,
  • Assist in conducting communications training workshops and other events in the region,
  • Develop communications training modules/presentations for our workshops and training activities,
  • Produce program materials,
  • Help SeaWeb and its regional partners execute social marketing campaigns and other strategic outreach activities,
  • Help grow our regional media engagement program, including assisting in story identification, story pitching and responding to journalist inquiries, and further developing our signature media events and our regional media lists,
  • Build relationships with key journalists,
  • Write and distribute press materials and maintain press kits,
  • Oversee the collection of media clips from the region,
  • Create multi-media content for our Web site and e-newsletters,
  • Assist in creation of presentations of our work, goals and objectives to key partners, donors and the media,
  • Help write grant proposals and reports,
  • Coordinate special event logistics,
  • Support the Asia Pacific Manager in the administration of the Asia Pacific Program.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, liberal arts, biology, environmental science or related field.
  • 2 to 5 years work experience in communications, marine conservation and/or community development,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience in translating science into compelling language,
  • Ability to present our work and goals to wide range of audiences, including partners, donors and the media,
  • Knowledge of Pacific Island cultures and customs,
  • Ability to budget and manage events,
  • Ability to handle several projects at one time and manage an often unpredictable business environment,
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, with the ability and willingness to work across many time zones, as well as work independently,
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel),
  • Willingness to travel.
