Description

Would you like to develop and implement new natural systems-based approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation? Work at the intersection of science, policy, and economics? Employ creative problem-solving in developing multiple-benefit solutions? Manomet has an opening for an Applied Forest Scientist.

POSITION SUMMARY

Manomet, Inc. is seeking an applied forest scientist to support a major new initiative to increase carbon sequestration and storage on managed forest land. This effort will focus on both forest management and carbon market participation. The project will utilize Manomet’s Climate Smart Land Network (CSLN), a 21st-century extension program designed to help large-scale forest landowners integrate climate science into their forest management and planning. The Network already contains over 30 million acres of managed forest and includes many of the major forestry companies in North America.

The Climate Smart Land Network bridges the gap between climate science and on-the-ground application. The Network also serves as a clearinghouse for “lessons learned” by members of the Network.  The CSLN is an information hub, providing clear, concise guidance to landowners and land managers on science-based strategies for reducing climate-related risks to managed forests.

In addition, the Climate Services program has an expanding portfolio of projects underway that employ a natural systems-based approach to climate resiliency in coastal communities. These projects combine regional green infrastructure analyses with engagement of localities to improve integration of climate concerns in local decision making.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Support a major new initiative to improve the climate change mitigation value of commercial forest land. In conjunction with the project team:

  • Analyze forest management options to determine potential mitigation value and feasibility of implementation.
  • Analyze existing carbon market participation and identify barriers to expanded participation.
  • Synthesize input from project partners to develop prioritized strategies to enhance forest mitigation.
  • Provide logistical support for webinars, calls, and meetings associated with the project.

Support the operation and expansion of the CSLN:

  • Research and write quarterly bulletins on climate change and related forest impacts.
  • Interact with forestry management professionals throughout North America on climate change to ensure that the CSLN maximizes its potential as an information hub.
  • Update the CSLN website on a regular basis to reflect ongoing research and information synthesis.
  • Expand the membership in the CSLN, build support in the funding community for the program, prepare grant applications, and obtain program funding.

Support and expand the watershed and coastal resiliency line of work:

  • Perform geospatial analysis to identify high-value green infrastructure based on a mix of attributes including habitat value, flood protection, and minimization of nonpoint source water pollution,
  • Research and writing in support of project deliverables,
  • Assist in facilitating group process to integrate the regional green infrastructure analyses with local planning and land-use decisions.

Assist the Senior Program Leader in management and expansion of the Climate Services program:

  • Contribute to project management, planning, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Build relationships and prepare grant applications to obtain funding from foundations, government, and corporate sources.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters or Ph.D. in forestry with course work in climate change and environmental or forest economics.
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex natural system, climate, and economic information to provide insight on regional climate change impacts, appropriate management response, and economic ramifications.
  • Strong analytic skills and the ability to work across disciplines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work respectfully with a broad range of forest landowners, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong computer skills associated with data analysis, GIS mapping, and word processing, including proficiency with ESRI GIS software and previous experience with analytic mapping.
  • Strong understanding of current governmental, non-governmental, and private climate change programs as they relate to forestry.
  • Highly energetic, smart, a self-starter, motivated to build a professional reputation and program, able to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to create and manage contracts and annual budgets and write competitive and successful proposals for growing the climate change program into the future.
  • This position will report to the Senior Program Leader for Climate Change at Manomet headquarters in Plymouth, MA. Work location for this position is negotiable. Preference will be for a candidate that is either able to relocate to Plymouth or in proximity to Plymouth such that regular face-to-face meetings are possible.
