Description

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, is seeking to employ a Habitat Delivery Coordinator for the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (AMJV). This is a full-time position with ABC. The AMJV Habitat Delivery Coordinator works for the AMJV partnership, which consists of state, federal, and NGO conservation agencies and organizations that have assumed responsibility for the implementation of national and international bird conservation plans within the Appalachian Mountains Bird Conservation Region. The Habitat Delivery Coordinator will work collaboratively with the AMJV's partners to develop and implement conservation projects that provide a dynamic forest landscape throughout the Appalachians that meets the full range of breeding season needs of bird species across major forest types and all forest seral stages.

This position requires an understanding of the AMJV's and ABC's mission, and a basic knowledge of Joint Venture structure and function. There is extensive contact with others within and outside the organization and partnership, in person, by telephone, and through e-mail and other correspondence. The work requires initiative, flexibility, and attention to detail. It is essential that the staff member in this position is able to prioritize tasks and work in a team environment. The position reports to the AMJV Coordinator.

 Primary Duties:

  1. Work with AMJV staff and partners to implement our Focal Landscape Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to establish a partnership framework in prioritized regions of the AMJV geography that accelerates conservation delivery across a range of ownerships to enhance and optimize forest health and structure over an extended period of time to meet a suite of complimentary objectives, including forest health, resilience, and wildlife. This position will coordinate efforts across the JV and assist partners with setting objectives, implementing strategies, monitoring and tracking progress, and assessing effectiveness of both management actions and bird response.
  2. Facilitate integration of science-based conservation recommendations into management guidelines and tools designed for on-the-ground practitioners and the transfer of this information through education and outreach (e.g., workshops, presentations, etc.).
  3. In collaboration with partners, actively seek sources of funding for conservation efforts, including grant writing to relevant programs (e.g., NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Program) and partnerships with industry.
  4. Develop and foster habitat delivery networks/partnerships across the AMJV, and communicate with them regularly on objectives, projects, and progress.
  5. Monitoring of work toward AMJV goals and objectives and to incorporate conservation accomplishments into the next generation the biological planning and conservation design tools. Prepare reports and make presentations and recommendations to the AMJV Management Board.

Position Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree or higher in forestry, wildlife ecology, or a related field (masters or higher preferred). An understanding of forestry and silviculture, conservation implementation, habitat management, ornithology, or wildlife biology desired.
  2. Knowledge of ecology and natural resource issues of the Appalachian Region, especially of neotropical migrant and resident birds.
  3. Knowledge of Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) landowner cost-share programs
  4. An entrepreneurial approach to achieving conservation objectives; ability to develop innovative solutions.
  5. Desire to work collaboratively with a diversity of stake-holders. Demonstrated networking and communication skills (presentation, inter-personal, reading, writing); project management experience, and organizing and leadership skills.
  6. Results-oriented. Demonstrated ability to accomplish ambitious conservation objectives.
  7. Ability to work and coordinate multiple projects at the same time. Ability to set priorities, work independently, efficiently and accurately, and meet deadlines.
  8. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and the ability to adapt messages to a diverse audience that includes habitat managers, conservation administrators, academia, and the general public.
  9. Ability and willingness to travel for significant periods of time, including remote locations.
  10. Proficiency with computers and software, especially Geographic Information Systems and databases.
