The Sustainable Transport Unit (located in Ispra (Italy) is a recent addition to the JRC’s Institute for Energy and provides scientific support for the development, implementation and monitoring of European policies in the area of Transport. Emphasis is given to the assessment of strategic transport technologies for all modes of transport. The Unit, with a total of about 45 staff, is subdivided into the 2 Actions among which the “Intelligent and Efficient Transport Systems” INETRANS provides support to the Strategic Transport Technologies Plan and to the sustainability assessment of road and non-road transport modes. The project is focused on studying the use of alternative fuels in aviation from the well-to-wings (WTW) perspective. In view of an expected increase in air traffic, and the need to diversify fuel sources, the study should look on the availability of bio-fuels in the New Member States and potential Candidate Countries. It will also have the goal to evaluate and apply the existing road vehicle WtW methodology and to assess the need to develop new methodologies or models for an aviation WtW study.
