This position will support wind turbine advanced controls development at NREL.
The engineer’s activities will include supporting the design and validation of advanced control algorithms for wind turbine enhanced energy capture and load mitigation. The engineer will perform extensive dynamics model simulations with tools such as the NREL FAST code to characterize dynamic behavior and load reduction potential of the advanced control algorithms. The engineer will also assist in the implementation of advanced control algorithms in field test turbines (such as the NREL Controls Advanced Research Turbines) and perform field testing of the system to complete the validation of control algorithm performance. The engineer will also perform extensive data analysis to prepare controller simulation and field test data for presentations at conferences and reports.

Some travel is required as well as a flexible work schedule to accommodate turbine field testing during the peak wind season.
Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.

Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering experiance with emphasis in system dynamics and control. Experience with software packages such as MATLAB, Simulink, and associated MATLAB control design toolboxes. Experience with NI Labview and the NREL developed simulation codes such as FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures and Turbulence). The candidate must demonstrate good communication skills (both oral and written) and be willing to work in a team environment.
Must be willing to learn the use of new tools such as commercial dynamics simulation codes such as MSC ADAMS, different programming languages, and design codes such as BLADED, HAWC2.
