American Conservation Experience: AmeriCorps Program Coordinator (California)

Summary:  American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, based in Santa Cruz, CA, is seeking an AmeriCorps Program Coordinator with a background in bookkeeping and basic accounting, as well as experience coordinating complex, concurrent operations in a non-profit or other energetic, fast paced environment.

ACE is a rapidly growing, dynamic organization with the reputation for providing well trained, professionally supervised crews to undertake critical natural resource management projects for federal, state, and local agencies.   In support of ACE’s mission to help prepare emerging land managers for careers as stewards of America’s public lands, ACE’s has received an AmeriCorps grant funding 40 annual corpsmembers, each of whom will provide 900 hours of community service.

AmeriCorps grant requirements are detailed and exacting.  The success or failure of any AmeriCorps program depends largely on the thoroughness and diligence of the Program Coordinator and his/her ability to adhere to stringent reporting requirements.

Position Available:    1 Full Time, Year Round, Permanent Staff Position

Start Date:  Position(s) available immediately.  Start date negotiable.

Length of Term:  Year-round

Hours:  40 hours per week.  Standard M-F schedule, though some flexibility is required for the occasional weekend or evening.

Position Description:   ACE’s AmeriCorps Program Coordinator will be responsible for writing quarterly reports, maintaining member and staff files, keeping staff hour logs, preparing for AmeriCorps and general programmatic audits, tracking expenditures in Quickbooks, processing receipts, classifying transactions, preparing expense reports, invoicing under fee for service contracts with land management agencies,  processing AmeriCorps reimbursements, preparing expense reports, processing payroll and AmeriCorps living allowance distributions, and generally assuring programmatic compliance with all administrative terms and conditions of ACE’s AmeriCorps grant.  The position is nearly 100 percent administrative and does not involve field training, field project coordination, or working with ACE’s field crews.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will possess a broad spectrum of organization and leadership skills gained from extensive experience with other fast paced organizations.   Candidates must exhibit positive interpersonal skills with the ability and willingness to enforce professional standards in a strict yet encouraging manner.   The position requires strength of personality, as the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator must unflinchingly enforce fiscal policies and programmatic procedures with other ACE staff as well as AmeriCorps members.    Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.   Minimum requirements include 3 years working with Quickbooks software or any combination of courses or certifications demonstrating proficiency with Quickbooks, at least two years of professional experience managing grants or coordinating Non-Profit and/or AmeriCorps operations, and a basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for non-profit organizations.    Previous AmeriCorps experience is a plus.
