ZSL is looking for a research intern to contribute to an exciting new initiative in the Conservation Policy Programme.  The Aichi Biodiversity Targets, agreed at the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan, are twenty targets for biodiversity and ecosystems that include, for example, to ‘establish a conservation target of 17% of terrestrial and inland water areas and 10% of marine and coastal areas’.  ZSL is coordinating a new initiative to investigate the scientific basis for these politically-agreed targets and identify key hotspots around the globe where failure to meet the targets is degrading ecosystem services critical to humanity.

The role will involve collaborating with a network of scientists, legal experts and government representatives to develop the research initiative, carrying out literature reviews and data analysis, writing scientific and policy documents, and organizing scientific meetings.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with eminent scientists and high-level political figures from around the world, and contribute to a number of ZSL publications.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent research experience) in biology, ecology, geography, environmental science or related discipline. Outstanding research, organisation, communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for the role.  Experience planning meetings and events will be an advantage.  Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to applying scientific research to policy solutions for complex global challenges.

This is an 8 month voluntary position. Lunch and travel expenses (within zones 1-6) will be reimbursed.

Please send a covering letter and CV to Elizabeth Clark (Elizabeth.clark@ioz.ac.uk) by Thursday 10th February 2011
