10 Ecological Survey Trainees
(18 month Scottish Wildlife Trust Training Programme supported by the HLF Skills for the Future Programme)

Bursary: £12.5k per annum pro rata
Base Location: Edinburgh/Central Belt of Scotland

At the forefront of wildlife conservation in Scotland with over 36,000 members, we have an amazing network of wildlife reserves and conduct an impressive range of practical conservation projects and environmental campaigns.

We now have a new, exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals who have a strong desire to have a career in ecological surveying and work towards a new qualification in this field. The course is designed to focus on practical learning in the field and successful applicants will be expected to work a normal 35 hour week, at least, completing actual field surveys in all weathers. Most of this work will be on the Trusts own reserves but there will be opportunities to work on other areas with the cooperation of partners offering exciting and topical case studies and projects.

The successful applicants will benefit from a purpose-built Programme which will bring out the very best, in what we believe, will be the best field ecologists in Scotland in the future. This Programme has been developed recognising a shortage in skilled ecological surveyors. The Programme will benefit from a wealth of specialist knowledge and experience in the Trust's staff as well as a wide pool of volunteer expertise, with strong support by senior management.

Applicants are expected to hold a degree or a matched vocational qualification in a relevant discipline, and experience in ecological survey will be an advantage. We are especially looking for strong characters who could have the potential to set up their own business or become self-employed in the future. Previous experience and skills in communications, presentation, business, report writing and field survey as well as ecological knowledge will all be useful. If candidates don't already hold a full driving licence they will be expected to gain one during the Programme.
