Opening for Research Assistant at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Applicant must be available any of the (7) days of the week at any time of the day. Hours scheduled will be approximately 40/wk. Applicant must be able to work in harsh desert conditions with extremes in weather and rough terrain.
Representative qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, or a related field; knowledge of or desire to learn the methods and equipment used in the assigned area of biological research; communication skills; data and record keeping skills; ability to use word processing software, database, and spreadsheet systems; and ability to work effectively alone as well as with others. Field and laboratory experience are required, as are the desire to learn proper desert tortoise husbandry, tortoise handling skills, health assessment techniques, and related activities.
These positions will perform a variety of laboratory, animal care, as well as collects, collates, maintains, and processes biological samples; collects and records data utilizing spreadsheet and database systems; conducts a variety of directed field-based research activities; assures animal care and field equipment are properly maintained and calibrated; documents, files, and maintains records; and prepares, arranges, and maintains records for sample and/or animal shipments. Will participate and assist in all aspects of tortoise care and husbandry to include burrow construction, feeding/watering, fence repair, translocations and monitoring, phlebotomy and processing of blood, cleaning and disinfection of equipment and facilities, data entry, and other tasks as required. These positions are short term. Starting times will vary between March 15 - May 15th, 2011 and ending time for these positions is approximately the end of September, 2011.
