What it's like to work here

You’ll provide technical advice to property teams on all aspects of the management of our agricultural land. This includes land farmed and managed ‘in hand’, as well as supporting our tenants and others responsible for managing National Trust land, including commoners.

You’ll be a member of the Consultancy Team in the Midlands and East of England Region, joining our Land and Nature Team. You're part of a national network of Land Use and Farming Advisors, who will offer a wealth of peer support and experience.

This is initially a two-year opportunity with the focus and substantive part of your delivery in the Peak District. Your portfolio will include a couple of other places to be confirmed.

What you'll be doing

Your priorities will be:

  • Collaborating with tenant farms to develop whole farm & land plans
  • Presenting/supporting tenant development in nature-friendly farming e.g., speaking at workshops, training events, farm walks and visits.
  • Reviewing grazing and land management across the PD and helping to implement changes with tenant farmers.
  • Liaising and supporting tenant farmers during subsidy system changes

There will be an expectation of being able to work across the whole region as required, based on skills, knowledge, and capacity.

Who we're looking for

We want an innovative problem solver, looking to realise the best outcomes for our climate and nature, We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Excellent engagement and negotiation skills, and a readiness for challenging conversations.
  • Experience explaining current farming issues and opportunities to a farming audience.
  • Substantial practical knowledge of farming and other land management systems.
  • Detailed understanding of farm businesses and experience of options appraisals.
  • Practical understanding of the principles of regenerative agriculture, soil management and farm carbon management.
  • Experience of delivering land use change and habitat creation programs
  • Understanding and implementation of farm compliance, legislation, and risk management.
  • Experience advising on Agri-environment scheme design and application.
  • Experience of project management and delivery.
