Project Officer - Woodland Creation

We are looking for two individuals keen to take the next step in their career and join our land management team at an exciting time of expansion. You will be involved in everything from identifying woodland creation opportunities to planning and delivering tree and hedgerow planting, as we work to deliver the authority’s aim to establish 1.8 million new trees across Hertfordshire by 2030.

Purpose of The Role

The Countryside and Rights of Way Service works in partnership with private landowners, communities and other local authorities to develop projects that enhance the environment for people and wildlife at a landscape scale and to manage our access network. Set within that, our land management team has a broad project portfolio encompassing woodland management, heathland restoration, chalk river restoration and developing old railway lines as non-motorised transport routes.

This role will involve working with landowners to identify opportunities for tree and hedgerow planting, preparing planting designs and ongoing management plans, submitting funding bids and preparing for planting day.

Opportunities and Challenges

You will be managing a diverse range of tree planting projects simultaneously: large and small, urban and rural, on public and private land, and encompassing woodland creation, hedge planting and individual tree planting. Key challenges will include communicating with stakeholders to secure support for projects and effectively prioritising the project workload. Other members of the land management team will provide support through training and facilitating outreach to landowners.

Technical Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for a demonstrable track record in the delivery of environmental land management. Your skills should include: excellent personal communication and consensus building to establish support for ideas; working independently and collaboratively with a range of colleagues, professionals, partners and members of the public; able to proactively manage a range of projects from start to finish, prioritising appropriately; a flexible and adaptable approach, problem solving and outcome oriented; a structured and well-organised approach to work planning and time management; competent management of allocated resources. A full current driving licence is essential, and you will be expected to work in rural locations with difficult terrain.
